Hello. I’m inaugurating this Substack feed as a place for students, assistants, aspiring photographers and maybe even a few veterans navigating an extremely dynamic industry. As a photographer with many years of experience, I’ve seen this business transition from a magazine / advertising / catalogue model to an Instagram / influencer model… I’ve survived a few economic recessions, one depression, a housing market collapse, a tech bubble, Covid, September 11th, Photoshop, Instagram… etc. etc. Yet I still remember what it was like in the beginning; dreaming of going to New York City after art school, grinding it out as an assistant for four years, and then those first jobs which meant I just might be able to make a living at this. Along the way I’ve learned a lot and have met some very interesting people; clients, colleagues and former assistants, all with their own unique experience to share. I feel VERY lucky to make a living doing what I love and would like to pay it forward by helping you avoid some of the mistakes I’ve made along the way and perhaps even learn from some of the things that have worked. The plan for this feed so far:
LESSONS LEARNED: Important lessons I’ve learned from art school, assisting, reading, shooting and teaching.
INTERVIEWS: Sharing insights with the people who have helped me and the ones who have found their own unique way toward success. Stay tuned.
MISCELLANEOUS: Any and all other stuff that might help.
Welcome and stay tuned!
I think these columns are fascinating- both as illuminating examples of how this business works and as insightful essays by an honest and amusing writer ✍️ .
I like how true, concise and clear you are. and a perfect length in this ADD world. I look forward to reading it all!
